MONTEGO BAY, St James — Sheriese Egbo, the Trinidadian woman who is accused of fleecing a number of persons out of their money by promising them non-existent jobs in Barbados, was further remanded when she was brought to the Montego Bay Resident Magistrates Court yesterday.Related story:Trini with brain tumour remanded in job scam case

Acting Senior Resident Magistrate Vivienne Harris, however, ordered that a lawyer be assigned to her by the time she returns to court on January 26 when charges against her will be further mentioned.

In court yesterday, Egbo pleaded guilty to a breach of the Immigration Act by overstaying, and not guilty to two additional charges of obtaining money by false pretences.

The woman, who claimed a myriad of medical problems, including having a brain tumour and being pregnant, told the court she was physically assaulted by a male police officer at the Freeport lockup resulting in her passing and vomiting blood.

She said the police officer also refused to feed her whenever he was on duty.

She also complained to the court that the investigating officer was “antagonising” her and asked that he be barred from asking her any more questions.

Meantime, Egbo’s Jamaican boyfriend, Kimanni Bailey, who was arrested along with her last month, has not taken up his $150,000 bail was appointed an attorney through the Legal Aid system.

The case was first reported on television news last month after 64 persons turned up at the Norman Manley International airport to fly to Barbados where they were expecting jobs.

The allegations are that between October and December last year, Egbo solicited money from several persons promising them jobs in Barbados.

The court heard that she collected between $17,500 and $40,000 from each person for a total of $286,000 but when they showed up at the airport on December 2 there were no tickets for them.

Bailey it was said was present in some instances when money was collected and in some cases money was sent to him to collect.

The court heard that Egbo had gone to the airport on December 2 but then disappeared and was later held in Kingston on December 11.
