Saturday Hustle
On Tuesday reggae-rock songstress Tessanne Chin released her debut album In Between Words, Saturday Hustle grooves to some of our favourite tracks from the singer.
Black Books
This song, first performed when Chin was the lead singer of the band Mile High, features a fusion of heavy metal, reggae and alternative. Add to that fusion cool lyrics and the result is a wicked club-banger.
“When I’m with you/ You melt my cool/I break the rules/But you don’t feel the way I do.”
Hideaway
This track ruled the airwaves back in 2009, so naturally it would make the cut on the album. Beautiful and balladic with just enough hard-rock edge, Hideaway is an ode to lovers looking to escape the mundane.
Messenger
Arguably the artiste’s most poignant work, this song speaks to challenging the status quo, defying the obvious path and daring to be different.
“Who will challenge the life we live by trying to forgive.”
Never Let Me Go
A collaboration with Shaggy, Never Let Me Go is a catchy dancehall-flavoured tune on the Jolli Rancha riddim and proves that the songstress is just as good at hooks as she is with verses.
Broken Melody
If ever there were a beautiful break-up song, this would be it. “I never could imagine waking up in the morning without you next to me/ And even though our love is gone there was a time you had the best of me.”
Guilty By Design
Rife with social commentary, Guilty By Design explores how society’s well-heeled often turn a blind eye to the plight of the needy.
The Conversation
A collaboration between Tessanne and Ky-Mani Marley, Conversation explores a seemingly Romeo-and-Juliet forbidden love between a don and a good girl. Sexy, gritty and oozing with in-the-streets appeal, the track is definitely among the most memorable on Marley’s album Radio.
