Informative article
Dear Editor,
The chronology of relevant historical events is well cited in Michael Burke’s article of January 6, “Milestones in 2011” at a time when pledges and resolutions form a traditional part of our lifestyle. We need to be aware of our history so as to inform our priorities and value system, to avoid past missteps and enable a more all-embracing pathway in the lives of us all.
The Lebanese Traders of 1891 are the real financial beneficiaries of that landmark Exhibition, and that event resulted in their attainment of the highest political office in the land, that is, former Prime Minister Edward Seaga. It is a strange coincidence that in America, Darrell Issa of Lebanese descent is now the main antagonist in plots to discredit the first black President of the USA.
Informative articles like Burke’s are more beneficial to our young people than penny-dreadful narratives and talk-show programmes where the host is lamenting over the fall of the Union Jack and having nostalgic memories of colonialism.
