Sparkling performances at COCAA meet
IRWIN, St James — There were five double winners at the third staging of the County of Cornwall Athletics Association’s (COCAA) First Chance meet held at Irwin High a weekend ago.
National Junior representative Andre Turner of Petersfield High, who won the Class One boys 800m/1,500m double, led the way as 24 schools, including defending ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ Champs winners Wolmer’s Boys showed up. Also, several clubs participated.
All track events from the 100m to the 1,500m were contested as well as the shot put for both male and female.
Turner, who is in his first season in Class One, took the 800m in an easy two minutes flat, followed by the 1,500m in four minutes and 20.8 seconds.
St Elizabeth Technical’s Andrew Fisher, who sat out Boys’ Champs last year after transferring from Albert Town High, took the Class One sprint double, winning the 100m in a hand-timed 10.8 seconds and the 200m in 22.5 seconds.
His teammate Julio Edwards won the Class Two equivalent in 11.0 seconds and 23.0, respectively.
In the girls’ section, Irwin’s Renae Ambersley took the 400m/800m double in one minute and two minutes 29.9 seconds, respectively, while Herbert Morrison’s Renee Pearson took the 100m/200m titles.
Pearson ran 12.9 seconds and 27.8 seconds for her wins.
The meet also saw the return of Mannings School to competitive track and field after a two-year absence, which saw Rimone Franklin in then Class Two girls 100m and Tafarian Connell in the Class Two 1,500m, winning their events.
