Spartan pip Rock River in Major League opener
CHAPELTON, Clarendon — Promoted Spartan Athletic edged Rock River 2-1 to kick-start their pursuit of the new-look Claro/Captain’s Bakery/Clarendon Major League title at the Office Oval in Turners, Clarendon on Saturday.
Damion Rowe fired in from the penalty spot as the Ann-Marie Powell-coached Spartan went ahead after 18 minutes.
Their early dominance was capped eight minutes on when Eric Barton notched a second goal from close range.
But two minutes later, Gladstone Pusey reduced the deficit with a long-range grounder, while Spartan failed to make their second-half supremacy count with numerous missed chances.
In the second game of the double-header, hosts Wood Hall were also 2-1 winners against Free Town, another promoted outfit.
Wood Hall took the lead in the third minute when Free Town failed to deal with Carlton Aiken’s low right-sided free-kick and Brendon Allen pounced with a simple tap in.
Tega Campbell doubled the lead just before the interval with a side-footed effort as the relegated Super League team did better on a wet pitch caused by heavy afternoon showers.
Free Town did manage a last-minute consolation from Leighton Matthews, after Aiken’s curling free-kick had crashed onto their crossbar.
