Village hold ‘Junglists’ in drab draw
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — Village United broke a four-game losing streak yesterday when they held Arnett Gardens to a 0-0 draw during a dull Digicel Premier League (DPL) encounter at the Elliston Wakeland Sports Complex on Sunday.
The Trelawny team who are struggling in the relegation zone inched to 21 points, while the improving ‘Junglists’ moved to 30 points.
The Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis-coached Arnett Gardens team ended the game with 10 players as Newton Sterling, a former ‘Villager’ received marching orders from referee Raymond Bogle for violent conduct in the 73rd minute of play.
In the end Village’s coach, Nedeir Dos Santos rued his charges failure to capitalise on their one-man advantage.
“I don’t like to criticise but in three minutes in that match we had one player sent off and several players injured in three minutes. It is a joke man. At least for five minutes when the guy got sent off they (Village) stopped playing,” Dos Santos bemoaned.
But Davis was satisfied, both with the one point on the road and his players’ performance.
“Overall I am satisfied with the performance of the team,” Davis argued during post-game comments.
Both teams failed to capitalise on opportunities to claim all three points.
Mid-way the first half Sterling got the first real chance to break the deadlock but his close-range shot went harmlessly to Ryan Cooper in goal for Village. Sterling did better with another opportunity which came his way shortly after, but his well-struck shot was kept out by Cooper, who parried for a corner kick.
Meanwhile, as the game began to open up before the break, Village’s Mouracio Gordon’s glancing header shaved the right upright on its way out of play.
But it was Shavar Campbell who sent shivers through the Arnett Gardens bench when he hammered a ball which beat the opposing goalkeeper all ends up and ricocheted in play.
