VCB prepares for tough 2011 season
MONTEGO Bay, St James — A repeat of last year’s performances would be satisfying for Jamaica’s sprint queen Veronica Campbell Brown as she continues to prepare for the 2011 season.
The newly-crowned Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association’s (JAAA) Female Athlete of the year for 2010 is among the nominees for Friday’s RJR National Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year accolade after finishing atop the world sprint list last year.
Campbell Brown enjoyed one of her best years by running a personal best 10.78 seconds in the 100m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon in July and her second fastest 200 — 21.98 seconds in New York a month earlier.
She added the IAAF World Indoor 60m title to her envious list of medals in Doha in March.
Campbell Brown, who used the week between the two awards events to train in Jamaica, said running faster times this year would be a dream.
“That would be great. The goal of many athletes is to keep doing well, keep getting better, keep getting faster, keep improving, and that is the same for me as well,” she told the Observer following a training session in Montego Bay yesterday morning.
“If I can come this year and run faster or even be consistent with last year, I will be in a really good position to get a medal at the (IAAF) World Championships,” she said.
In stating that she was “honoured to have received the JAAA female athlete of the year,” Campbell Brown said 2010 “was a great year for me and I’m very satisfied with my performances, so for me to be awarded by the JAAA was a great honour for me and I’m thankful for that.”
Looking ahead to this season, the two-time Olympic 200m gold medalist predicts that “The competition will be fierce this season; it’s a championship year and everybody is preparing and it will be great.
“My main focus… is just to stay healthy; once I’m healthy I can train well and work on what I need to work on and keep improving,” she said.
With the weather in the United States where she is based being cold this winter, getting a chance to train in the hotter weather here was also good for her.
“It’s been great training here. The weather is conducive to good training; it’s hot and so you can get sweaty and get the muscles loose.”
Campbell Brown is set to open her season next weekend at the 104th Millrose Games in New York where she will run the 60m.
“I just want to do well and do my best, just go out there and run a good race and just keep preparing for the outdoor season,” she said.
Campbell Brown is scheduled to run one more indoor race this season, but that is still to be finalised.
She is under no illusion as to what to expect this season and says she is expecting tough competition from the very start.
“I’m expecting great competition this year,” she said. “This is the World Championships and everyone wants a medal, but there are only three in each race and there are lots of talented female athlete out there, both local and overseas,” she stated.
