R&B trio SWV promises to deliver the hits
The R&B trio, Sisters with Voices, popularly known as SWV, is slated to grace the Jamaica Jazz and Blues festival stage this Friday and woo their local audience.
The members of SWV, Leanne ‘Lelee’ Lyons, Cheryl ‘Coko’ Gamble and Tamara ‘Taj’ Johnson, met during school in 1990 and formed a sisterly bond in the name of music. Over the years the groups’ songs have moved many and earned the sisters a place in the history books.
Speaking with the group in a recent interview, the ladies said that they were eagerly looking forward to the trip and are happy to have been considered for the line-up.
“It feels great and we can’t wait. We’re ready to taste the food! We are also honoured that you chose SWV to be a part of the festival this year! We all are excited!” the ladies said.
“We are prepared to do some of the hits that created our presence and history. We’d like to have fun at the jazz festival,” they added.
They admit to loving reggae music and growing up hearing quite a bit of it in New York. When asked about the groups’ most recent accolade being named one of the Top 500 pop artistes of the past 25 years the response was a unanimous Wow!
“That’s awesome and it warms our hearts!” they said.
“We had a ball in Europe touring with Faith Evans this past December. Since New Kids and Backstreet are out there touring again, we think it would be awesome if a few females could do the same,” they added.
SWV has made a name for itself worldwide with hits like Right Here, I’m So Into You, Weak and Anything.
After splitting to make time for their individual careers, the three resurfaced as a group in 2007 doing performances with Bobby Brown, New Edition and After 7. In June of 2008 the group performed their hit Weak alongside Alicia Keys and TLC’s Waterfalls at the BET Awards.
“There will still be classics. We’re not going to do what everybody else is doing. We have our own thing people just love and if we change it too much they’re not gonna want to hear it. We’re not going to try to re-create the wheel, just start rolling again. We started off being trendsetters, I think, ’cause we have a lane that belongs to SWV and that makes it all worth it”, when talking about their comeback.
“Life keeps us motivated! This is all we know how to do. Without performing, life seems dull! Also our kids and our fans keep us motivated,” SWV ended.
