Injury could derail Francis’ indoor season
NATIONAL high jump record-holder Sheree Francis’ participation in three more indoor meets in Europe is in question after she suffered an ankle injury while competing in the Czech Republic on Wednesday.
Francis, who left the island on Sunday, was scheduled to take part in four competitions but managed just two jumps at the first stop on the Moravia High jump tour in Trinec Czech Republic.
Francis finished ninth with a best jump of 1.76m as Russia’s Mariya Kuchina won with 1.97, with Sweden’s Emma Green second with 1.88. Three jumpers tied on 1.85.
The former Vere Technical athlete who set a new national record of 1.93 last season, was scheduled to compete on Saturday in Hustopece, Slovakia before competing in Banska, Slovakia on February 9 and finishing at the Gent Indoor in Gent Belgium on February 12.
Francis, who has held record at virtually every major meet in Jamaica, including all four at ‘Girls Champs’, won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in India last year.
