Women’s Day…wow!!!

Women’s Day…wow!!!

Elva a talk up!

Hail all converts, followers and daily indulgers in what has now become the greatest comedy show Jamaica has very witnessed. Bigger than Comedy Buss and acts on Comedy Central sewn together.

What I love about the series is that it is produced by Jamaicans; the stars in the lead roles are Jamaicans (well that is arguable, since some have dual citizenship) and it is free for all to observe, whether or not you have cable television. Trust me, the Manatt enquiry could not come at a better time in Jamaica’s history. At a time when normally we would have been having fervent discussions and debates about escalating prices at the petrol pumps; crime getting even more out of control; several major catastrophes occurring worldwide and the very ill state of our Nation’s economy, the majority of us take time off from our otherwise productive day to tune in and laugh at the antics of some of Jamaica’s finest comedic talent, wasting even more of our very limited financial resources.

Well timed Bredda Bruce, hats off to you and your team of geniuses that came up with such a brilliant scheme. Makes me wonder why they never came up with this plan earlier. Do you know how much revenue this country could have gained if they had syndicated and sold advertising space on the FINSAC Enquiry and made it a public fiasco as well? Millions of US dollars and an opportunity for us to see our highly effective elected leaders show us their ‘sensitive’ side. C’mon Bredda B, step up your game man. There is money to be made and a lot more scandals to come between now and the next general election. You have the power to make back some of these funds wasted on paying people to look bored at the Enquiry. We can do it….Yes we can!!

Anyway, that’s not what I wanted to talk about this week at all. Gosh, the influence is so strong that they have even unwittingly taken up some of my limited column space. Darn it! What got under my bonnet this week was the celebration of “International Women’s Day” on Tuesday March 8. What a prekkeh! This was the first time I was being made aware of such an offering and I gather it has been around for awhile (big surprise there) and when I sought to find out the reasoning and justification for such a big reward of a whole day in my honour from the learned scholars on my Twitter (@ElvaJamaica) and Facebook pages; only one person understood what it was about and that person happened to be involved with activities celebrating the noteworthy mention here on the rock. Most people didn’t know or didn’t seem to care. If I could, I would have loved to publish some of the remarks submitted in reply to my query, but they are not fit for airplay.

I gather that the day was so declared by our male overlords to acknowledge the work of the women who helped to give us modern day she-gods rights and the freedom to earn and acquire property. All things we were denied back in the days when men ruled the Earth. I’m still stumped (again, no surprise here). One whole day? Really? Oh my, *sarcastic voice* I am truly impressed and very grateful. I have a question though: Why isn’t there an International Men’s Day? Isn’t that a gender bias? What about that poor guy that invented fire or the caveman that came up with the wheel, surely they too deserve to be recognised.

It would have been more sincere and meaningful to me if, along with a declared day they had put in place some sort of financial compensation for labour pains during childbirth; all the years we couldn’t vote or own stuff and putting up with ignorant male leaders; then gave every woman a cheque and an entire day at the spa leaving only men in charge for the day. Now that would be something to jump and shout about. I can almost feel the heat of the steam coming from under some of my female readers’ collars, but that’s just my take on it. I’m open to learning new things, so please send me your reasoning via email elvachatalot@yahoo.com and let’s see if I can be convinced to whip out my pompoms and cheer for International Women’s Day next year. Have a great weekend and love your country and its citizens. Bless
