Nature’s Hand-made Paper
Nature’s Hand-made paper is a community effort born out of a collaboration between Portland’s Social Development Commission and a member of the Peace Corps, and dates as far back as 1988. Portland native Gloria Dorman, the sole remaining member of the founding group, continues the recycling tradition and shares with SO the intricacies of the process, which begins with plant fibres.
Plant leaves like avocado, corn, breadfruit, almond, bamboo and banana are used to add fibre to the paper, (the trunk of the banana tree can also be used). These first boiled, then blended, strained, added to the paper and dried. From this an array of products like cake boxes, gift boxes and cards, book markers, notelets, writing paper, envelopes and greeting cards are made.
The plant fibres add a lovely texture and pattern to the paper, making them excellent, functional gift items as well as environmentally friendly.
Nature’s Hand-made Paper products are retailed at Things Jamaican outlets at the Jamaica Business Development Centre and the Marina in Portland as well as the Mockingbird Hill Hotel.
