Green claims NCAA Division II Indoor award
LEFORD Green of Johnson C Smith University was on Wednesday announced as the National Men’s Athlete of the Year for the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Season by the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
A Bridgeport High and Kingston College past student, the 23-year-old Green sealed the award when he won the 400 metres title Saturday at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in a personal best 46.38 seconds.
It was his second 400m indoor title, having won it in 2008.
He also anchored the Golden Bulls to victory in the 4x400m relay — the first in the school’s history.
At the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) indoor championships in mid-February, Greeen also won the 400m, with the Golden Bulls taking the bronze in the 4×400.
The reigning CAC Games 400m hurdles champion, Green has had a stellar collegiate season. Earlier this month he was the Indoor Division II Atlantic Region Track Athlete of the Year. In 2010, Green took both the regional and national track athlete of the year honours for the outdoor season.
Green’s outdoor season begins this weekend with the UNC-Charlotte 49er Classic in North Carolina.
