NBA Player Profile: Rudy Gay
Name: Rudy Gay
Team: Memphis Grizzlies
Position: Forward
NBA Statistics: 17.8 (points), 5.6 (rebounds), 1.9 (assists)
Background: While still being relatively new to the NBA, Rudy Gay is already proving to be a franchise standout; being in the top 10 for the Memphis Grizzlies in points, rebounds, blocks and steals.
His basketball journey began at age 12 playing in his community of Turner Station in Maryland where he was recognised as a talent for the future. From the get-go, he was encouraged by his mother to remain humble in his endeavours and he has held on to that advice throughout his career. He initially attended the Eastern Technical High School, but transferred to the Archbishop Spalding High School after his second year at the school.
In his two years at Archbishop, Rudy received First Team All-Baltimore Catholic League honours as well as the Washington Post All Met Basketball Player of the Year.
Despite stating himself that he grew up cheering for the University of Maryland, a series of controversial events resulted in him deciding to enrol in the University of Connecticut. While majoring in Liberal Arts, Rudy was also able to claim honours such as the Sporting News’ National Freshman of the Year award as well as co-winner of the 2005 Big Eastern Conference Freshman of the Year. He also received the distinction of being invited to play for the US Men’s U-21 World Championship team.
He declared himself eligible for the NBA Draft in 2006 and was selected as the eighth overall pick by the Houston Rockets before being traded instantly to the Grizzlies; a nice piece of business for the franchise. His greatest achievement thus far is contributing to the USA’s 2010 FIBA World Championship title success.
