Defending champs bow into Flow Cup today
ROUND two of the Flow Champions Cup, scheduled for today and tomorrow, promises some real intrigue, as defending champions Boys’ Town begin their title defence against Humble Lion at Collie Smith Drive at 3:00 pm.
The game marks a repeat of last year’s final, when Boys’ Town won the island’s top knockout football competition.
The two will renew acquaintances in what is shaping into a little rivalry of sorts, between the two premier league outfits.
This is, however, just one of four all-premier league clashes which highlight this round, which sees the entry of the top six teams in the top flight.
Also on today, Waterhouse will host St George’s at Drewsland (6:00 pm), while tomorrow, Sporting Central Academy welcome Portmore United to Brancourt at 3:00 pm, and Harbour View face rivals Tivoli Gardens in another highly-anticipated clash at the Harbour View Stadium at 7:00 pm.
Boys’ Town and Humble Lion featured in one of the most exciting games ever witnessed on local soil; bringing the curtains down on the 2010 season with the Collie Smith Drive-based Boys’ Town coming out on top by a 3-2 margin, to secure back-to-back titles.
However, still hungry for success, the Andrew Price-coached team is eager to etch their name on the trophy for a third consecutive year. Boys’ Town are certainly the form team in this competition in recent years, having muscled their way to three finals in four years, with their only defeat coming at the hands of Portmore United in 2006-2007.
Humble Lion are the first hurdle and Price is determined to get beyond this stage and march his team to another victorious campaign.
“We are very excited; this competition always brings the best out of my team. We will be defending the title and the guys are in very good spirits and are looking for the three-peat,” said Price. “We know that we are defending champions and everyone will be coming at us, they know this and they are prepared to deal with it as well.”
Harbour View and premier league leaders Tivoli Gardens have been crossing swords in knockout competitions quite often in recent years and it seemed destined that the two giants would once again cross paths.
The ‘Stars of the East’ have not lifted an all-island knockout title since 2002 and are desperate to get their hands back on the coveted piece of silverware.
“From a spectator’s point of view, it’s going to be a very intriguing contest,” said Harbour View coach Donovan ‘DV’ Hayles, while pointing out his team’s determination to better last year’s quarter-final elimination.
“In truth, it is a tough draw for both teams, but we hope to get through this match with a positive result,” Hayles added.
Tivoli Gardens Alvin Shaw is also expecting a tough fight but believes his team is equipped to turn back their rivals.
“When both teams play we tend to see the best out of both sets of players so it’s going to be a challenge and certainly an exciting game,” said Shaw.
In other Round Two games; Arnett Gardens play Downs at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex (6:00 pm); Monymusk welcome Frazsiers Whip to the Monymusk Sports Complex (3:00 pm) today, while Sandals Whitehouse tackle Montpelier at Frome Sports Complex (3:00 pm) and Benfica host giant-killing Santos at Drax Hall (3:00 pm) tomorrow.
