St Andrew dethrone Papine in U-19 hockey
ST Andrew High dethroned Papine High with a stinging 2-0 victory in the final of the ISSA/JHF Under-19 Schoolgirl League at Mona on Wednesday.
Kamille Griffiths and Kimberly Shaw scored in the 24th and 34th minutes for St Andrew to complete the tournament without conceding a goal.
“We’ve worked hard, we’ve had fantastic support from the school. The parents have been there, everybody has been a part of this,” said an ecstatic Dr Holt, whose teams are defending champions in the Under-16 and Under-14 competitions.
Papine’s coach Andrea Hoo Thomas “congratulated” her girls “for a hard-fought match”.
“We didn’t expect Andrews to come walk over us even with the level of inexperience we have now. My key players stood out — Chakira (Airey), Samantha (Jones), Ombretto (Gordon),” she said.
Jones of Papine was the player of the first week; Griffiths of St Andrew the player of the second week; Demi Nicholson of St Andrew, the player of the third week; with Griffiths being the player of the fourth week and MVP of the final in the Under-19 League.
Meanwhile, the Under-19 schoolboy semi-finals will take place this afternoon with defending champions Munro College taking on Papine at 2:00 and unbeaten Jamaica College (JC) facing St Andrew Technical at 3:30.
JC’s Kemar Mitchell lead the schoolboy league with nine goals, ahead of Munro College’s Brandon Clarke, five goals. JC’s Jonte Johnson and Munro’s Damali Morgan have each scored three goals.
The boys final will be played on Monday at 3:30 pm, after the third-place play-off at 2:00 pm.
