Sir Von makes 4-y-o debut in Hosang Trophy race
Von G White’s promising colt Sir Von makes his debut as a four-year-old and takes on 10 rivals in the $715,000 George Hosang Trophy Overnight Allowance test at Caymanas Park today.
The 1,000 metres straight contest is one of eight races representing champion jockeys and the annual memorial race for Al Gopie on the Jockeys’ Guild Of Jamaica nine-race programme.
Five-time champion jockeys Winston Griffiths and Trevor Simpson, four-time winner Omar Walker along with Shane Ellis, Wesley Henry and Percy Williams are among the other riders in whose honour races will be run.
Prepared for the races by champion and leading trainer Wayne DaCosta, Sir Von, a talented bay colt by Even The Score out of Premier Gray (Premiership) and bred in the USA by Jody B Clemow, is returning from a near six-month respite well trained.
Lightly raced the son of Even The Score has won three of his four races the last on October 2 last year when he won effortlessly over 1,200 metres in a brisk time of 1:12.1 by 2 lengths. Quite comfortable over the straight course as well as riding the bends, Sir Von should continue from where he left off in October as he seems even more effective going straight, having already won over the distance in 58.4 seconds and was narrowly beaten over the distance by the impressive local-bred Sea Devil in a time of 58.1, while allowing his conqueror 4.0kg.
From three starts at this level, he has already won twice and returning at a more than comfortable 53.0kg for stable jockey Omar Walker, should make a winning four-year-old debut.
Sir Von’s main competition should come from Patrick Lynch’s Super Dave, a speedy six-year-old dark bay horse who has won several of his eight career wins over the distance. He finished three lengths second to Sir Von’s stablemate Lifeisjustforliving over the distance on February 16 in a fast time of 57.1 seconds after leading the field for 700 metres on that occasion, and should once again come calling.
But he was never the soundest of runners, hence only 18 races in his career, but he is adept over the straight and if Dick Cardenas could get the son of Royal Minister to hold his gallop, then Sir Von will have to run a fast time to continue his winning ways.
Other top contenders are Sir Von’s stablemates, the American-bred four-year-old dark bay, brown filly Fluffy and The Guardian, who enjoys the distance and won his last race over same, along with Dance So Sweet, another American-bred chestnut three-year-old.
Fuffy is also well drilled for her second outing as a four-year-old. Probably better suited to longer distances, nonetheless the daughter of Chelsea Cat like Sir Von began her career with victory over the straight course and will enjoy the conditions.
She enters the contest as the top weight of 55.0kg, but with the 2.0kg claim of apprentice Georgina Sergeon to come in at 53.0kg is expected to be in the heat of battle to the very end.
