Stewart clocks world-leading time in hurdles
JAMAICA’s Keiron Stewart of the University of Texas at Austin clocked a world-leading and personal best 13.44 seconds to win the 110m hurdles at the Texas v Arkansas v UCLA tri-meet at the Mike A Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas on Friday.
The 21-year-old Stewart, a Kingston College standout, also broke the Longhorns 15-year-old school record of 13.50 seconds set by American Derek Spears at the 1996 NCAA Division One Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon on May 31.
Stewart demolished the field, with Longhorn teammate Jake Wohlford second in a personal best 14.03 seconds and Caleb Cross of the University of Arkansas third clocking a season-best 14.36.
Stewart’s countryman, Andrew Riley of the University of Illinois, won 110m hurdles at the NCAA Division One Outdoor championships last year, posting 13.45.
A 2008 World Junior Championship bronze medallist in the sprint hurdles, Stewart also finished second in the 400 hurdles at the tri-meet in a season best 52.12 seconds, after UCLA’s Brian Law, who won in a personal best 51.95.
Stewart later ran the third leg on Longhorns winning 4x400m relay quartet, which timed 3:11.07.
Longhorns head coach Bubba Thornton said after the meet he was focusing on “strength and conditioning”, noting that Stewart had the perfect day, “nice and relaxed”.
“We talked about the last four or five hurdles, what he had to do there… because the wind, once you get moving like that you start getting close to them.
“You have to stay in between them. He did a really good job of that. Had he run through, he probably would have run 13.35 or 36. It was a legal run,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Tarik Batchelor of the University of Arkansas won the long jump at the tri-meet with a mark of 7.57 metres.
