Carnival Climax – Soca season wraps

Bunji, Fay-Ann, Machel in town this weekend

AFTER almost 12 weeks of palancing, the 2011 carnival season culminates this weekend with a heady roster of activities leading up to Sunday’s grand road march through the streets of the Corporate Area.

Tonight into tomorrow morning the streets of the City is expected to come alive with any of the J’Ouvert parties scheduled to take place.

Acropolis Bacchanal J’Ouvert aptly themed Dawn of the Dynasty boasts the SocaFireman himself, Bunji Garlin alongside his wife, Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez backed by the Asylum Band.

Bunji Garlin is undisputedly a lyrical genius, winner of Soca Monarch on four occasions, and a true artiste of the people. While Fay-ann has many accolades but it was in 2009 while pregnant that she displayed her true soca-dominance sweeping the Groovy Soca Monarch title with Heavy T Bumpa, the Power Soca Monarch and Road March titles with Meet Super Blue.

The organisers note that the fusion of Faye-Ann and Bunji alongside Asylum Band epitomises a powerhouse of soca talent, perfectly fitting for a fiery performance at Acropolis Bacchanal J’Ouvert.

Their 2011 hits received heavy rotation throughout the season: Fay-Ann’s Consider it Done and Pressure on it and Bunji’s Hold a Burn and Me Alone and their collaboration Go Home.

It is their 2010 collaboration Call Me that speaks best to what can be expected tonight at the Mas Camp “If you want the session mash up tonight, tell them call meh!”

The gates open from 10:00 pm at the Mas Camp where the paint and madd party begins with a line-up of talented soca deejays, DJ Smoke from Rennaisance, DJ Back-to- Basics (Trinidad) and MC Wassi delivering a host of sponsor giveaways.

In true Bacchanal Jamaica style just before the dawn arises the party will take to the streets of Kingston for the ultimate Bacchanal J’Ouvert Road Party.

With a wave soca magic sweeping the island in the form of LIME All-Island Carnival, anticipation is fever-pitch as soca lovers will revel in true soca heaven tonight eagerly await Soca Supa Soaka, the J’Ouvert leg.

That event takes place at the UDC Field in New Kingston and is hinted to be the best of the LIME All-Island Carnival series.

Soca Supa Soaka will be a J’Ouvert like Jamaicans have never seen before locally. Not only will there be endless water and paint, but J’Ouvert fanatics will be basking in endless melted chocolate. The notion of a chocolate J’Ouvert is an old Trinidadian tradition that the promoters, Tristar Entertainment, have adopted.

Tristar Entertainment director Marvin Lawrence expressed that they wanted this J’Ouvert to be as real and as fun as possible.

“We thought it was important to have the authenticity of a J’Ouvert be brought to the fore in Jamaica and our sponsors absolutely loved the idea,” Lawrence said. The chocolate will be provided by one of the main sponsors Grace through their product Roma Cocoa.

Soca Supa Soaka will see soca monarch Machel Montano hitting the stage. Also performing on the event’s main stage will be the king of the Dancehall Beenie Man.

The carnival activities reach their apex on Sunday with the grand road parade featuring costumes, trucks and bands through the streets of the capital city.
