Despite going undrafted in the 2009 NBA Draft, Wesley Matthews Jr has played like a top first round draft pick since joining the league. In fact of the many players who have entered the league as undrafted players, only a few can boast to being as effective and influential as he has been thus far.
Like many other players in the league, basketball is in his blood being born to former NBA player and two-time champion Wesley Matthews Snr.
He attended the James Madison Memorial High School where he was not only a basketball standout but a football standout as well. After being selected Mr Basketball for the state of Wisconsin in 2005 he controversially chose to attend Marquette University instead of following in his father’s footsteps to the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
There he has reasonable success and even entered the school’s basketball history records shooting an amazing 10 for 10 field goals to set the record for the highest field goal accuracy when shooting 10 shots or more.
Transitioning to the league in 2009, the Sacramento Kings and the Utah Jazz both saw it fit to give him a chance in the league but in the end it was the latter, who decided that they were satisfied enough to offer him a contract.
He started 48 games for the Jazz and was influential in their push to the play-offs but unfortunately it did not last for long as they were dismissed by the Los Angeles Lakers in the semi-finals. He moved to the Portland Trailblazers at the beginning of the current season and helped them to the play-offs as well and with his game developing by the season better days are definitely ahead.
