Bridgmohan stays in contention with double
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (CMC) — Jamaican Shaun Bridgmohan landed a double at Churchill Downs on Friday, to remain among the early frontrunners in the newly launched Spring season.
The 31-year-old scored with the favourite Culotte in the US$49,000 race five before returning to win with another favourite Wonka in race eight, to make headlines on the 11-race card at the historic racetrack.
Bridgmohan moved to five wins for the season which began April 30, and is four behind leader Julien Leparoux.
Going 4-1/2 furlongs in race five, Bridgmohan and Culotte battled for the lead with Queen Teuta before getting clear at the furlong marker.
Bridgmohan then kept the two-year-old bay filly to task as she reached the wire by 5-1/4 lengths.
He turned in a contrasting ride to win race eight over seven furlongs for the three-year-olds and upward.
Wonka trailed through the quarter mile as Yo Coltrane and Mad Aftershock battled for the lead. Bridgmohan then brought the bay colt with a strong run on the turn to grab the lead in the stretch and race to the finish 6-3/4 lengths clear.
