Cop whose gun ‘went off’ and killed girlfriend slapped with manslaughter charge
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A police constable implicated in the fatal shooting of his girlfriend, 20-year-old Jimoy Suckoo, at a hotel in May Pen, Clarendon last year after his gun “went off” has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter.
He has been identified as 28-year-old constable Tavoy Hussey.
The ruling to charge Constable Hussey, handed down by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), followed investigations by the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) and the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
The cop had been taken in for questioning last year following conflicting reports he shared regarding the January 12, 2025 shooting.
Suckoo, also known as Janay or Nay, was a bartender who lived in Paradise, Westmoreland. At the time of the incident, the deceased had been in a relationship with the constable.
According to a police report, Suckoo and Hussey were at Hotel Versalles in May Pen when she received a single gunshot wound to her chest from the cop’s service weapon, a Glock pistol.
The constable initially said he had placed the pistol on the bed where his girlfriend had been resting. He alleged that his back was turned when he heard a loud explosion, after which he discovered she had been shot in her chest.
According to the report, while at May Pen Police Station the constable gave another account of the incident. In that version he said he had decided to get something to eat and was removing his pistol from his leg holster in order to secure it when the gun slipped from his hand. In attempting to catch the gun, the constable said, he accidentally triggered the firearm which discharged a round in the chamber.

Hussey was offered bail in the sum of $1.5 million with one to two sureties, and reporting conditions. His next court date is scheduled for September 3, 2026.
Since January 2024, 64 law enforcement officers have been charged in relation to incidents investigated by Indecom. Of that total, eight JCF police officers and one correctional officer were charged in 2026.
