Diaspora conference makes no sense
Dear Editor,
It is this time of the year again when the so-called diaspora group raises its ugly head. Reading the article of May 12, “Franklyn urges gov’t to rescue doubtful Diaspora conference” confirmed my belief that these are PNP activists who claim they are representing Jamaicans in the diaspora.
I don’t understand the motive of this group, what the group’s priority is, and why it is having a conference that must involve the government. It is best to leave the government alone, if this group wants to be taken seriously. They might be working as activists, trying to overthrow the government, but they are not a political party, and have nothing to do with the politics in Jamaica. Trying to stay in a foreign country and run Jamaica is despicable and disrespectful to the people back home. What gives this group the right to think it can throw salt in Aunt Puncy’s pot in Wait-A-Bit from Canada, UK and the US?
If these people had any leadership qualities they would approach this diaspora issue in a more progressive way instead of working the way they do.
The diaspora group should be concentrating on the more than three million Jamaicans living outside of Jamaica to get them involved in making our hospitals have all the equipment for major surgery; our basic schools to give the kids a good start to make them realise that school is cool; the cancer group, the home for the elderly and the many associations, etc. Those are projects the group should work on instead of antagonising the government with unreasonable ideas and showing disrespect to our people back home.
Having a conference in Jamaica is a waste of time, space and money. These people only want to sit around a big table dipping biscuits in their tea and coffee and talking pure poppycock which so many are tired of hearing. Diaspora residents should rally our people in their countries and tell them that their country needs them.
Might I add that the present government must resign because of the corrupt issues that have surfaced within the last four years.
