Maxi Priest, Mykal Rose and Tony Rebel to headline South Florida’s Rebel Salute debut
After two postponements, Rebel Salute makes its South Florida debut on April 19 at Miramar Regional Park in Miramar, South Florida. Maxi Priest, Mykal Rose and founder Tony Rebel are among the headliners.
Initially scheduled for April 25 2025, it was postponed until September 28. But organisers, citing unstable weather, rescheduled the show to April this year.
“This is not a cancellation, it’s a commitment to our fans, our artistes, and our legacy. Rebel Salute has never compromised on quality or care, and this decision reflects the same spirit that has guided us over three decades,” Tony Rebel told the Jamaica Observer last September.
Rebel Salute will take place in a city with one of the largest Jamaican communities in South Florida. Miramar is also home to pockets of West Indians and a considerable Spanish population.
The Miramar Regional Park also hosts the annual Grace Jamaica Jerk Festival which attracts thousands of patrons. Lead promoter of that event is Eddy Edwards, who is vice mayor of Miramar.
“To have one of the most famous roots-reggae festivals in our city is a delight. This will attract visitors to Miramar and deliver a positive economic impact,” Edwards told Observer Online. “Miramar is a vibrant, growing city that fully supports the performing arts. We have a diverse community and are open to celebrate the unique cultures of our residents.”
The inaugural Rebel Salute was held on January 15 1994, Tony Rebel’s birthday. It took place at Fayors Entertainment Complex in his home parish of Manchester with Garnet Silk as headliner.
It has changed venues over the years. After leaving Manchester, Rebel Salute was held at Port Kaiser Sports Club in St Elizabeth before relocating to its current home at Plantation Cove in Priory, St Ann.
There was no show in Jamaica this year, with organisers pointing to the impact of Hurricane Melissa last October as the reason for cancelling.
