KINGSTON, Jamaica — Two of the four men injured in an explosion at a garage adjacent to Guardsman Group-Beryllium Limited headquarters, on South Camp Road, have returned to Jamaica following intensive burn treatment overseas.

Fabian Brown was one of two airlifted back to Jamaica on Friday in the company of his wife, Myesha, who spoke to Observer Online.

“The journey, I must say, has been rough. It has been hard,” she said.

Despite this, Myesha had high praise for those involved in her husband’s care, including the staff of Wellstar Cobb Burn Centre and Trinity Airlines as well as the Burn Foundation of Jamaica and their Crisis Support Charity arm.

She issued an urgent call to corporate Jamaica to put their support behind the foundation.

“I encourage Jamaica, corporate Jamaica, to support the Crisis Support Charity…it’s not just supporting the survivors. It’s not just burned people alone. But overall, if you look at what they have done, they’ve been doing good. And if it wasn’t for them, we would not have been able to leave here and for him to get that thorough care that he needs.”

Guardsman had committed to supporting the men who were injured in the May 27 incident, which firefighters said happened before 9:00 am while welding work was being done on the property.

Brown was airlifted along with Damian Walters and a third man for care overseas after the incident. The fourth man passed away at a local hospital before he could be airlifted. Walters also passed away while undergoing treatment overseas.

Meanwhile, as Myesha expressed her sorrow at the two deaths, she and Fabian are now preparing for a life that may look significantly different.

“The journey is just beginning. People might think, oh, you get burned, you’re healed. This is a life-changing experience. People need to understand that when you experience burns and you’re recovering, it takes years, and your life will never be the same. The sun, something that we take for granted, you can no longer go in that,” she said.

Despite the challenges, she expressed faith in God and gratitude for her husband’s life.

“Not until you have someone who has been affected severely by burns can you know what that journey is, and I’m thankful, grateful that Fabian is still here with us,” she said.
