Tennis boss wants game to be on lips of Jamaicans
PRESIDENT of Tennis Jamaica Aubyn Hill said the association wants to ensure that the sport is on the lips of everyone across Jamaica.
Hill was speaking during the closing ceremony of the seventh staging of the Globe Insurance Open Junior Tennis Championships on Sunday at the Liguanea Club.
“We want to grow the sport, and as such we want persons to be associated with the game and become more involved in tournaments such as these,” Hill said.
The day’s results saw intriguing and exciting play and Hill was pleased with the performance of the players.
In the boys Under-18 category, Simon Levy defeated Horatio Ludford 6-1, 6-3 to lift the championship trophy, while Roger Lyn (6-0, 6-0) got by Jacob Bicknell in the boys Under-16 category.
Also in the boys Under-14 final, James Cruze defeated Blaise Bicknell 6-0,6-0 to lift the title, while Luke Roberts was a 6-2,6-7,7-4 winner over Nicholas Gore in the boys Under-12 category.
And in the boys Under-10 segment, Senna Summerbell defeated Dimirti Traile 8-5 to take that category.
Over in the girls’ section, Iuesha Sterling defeated Isabelle Rousseau 6-2,6-3 to take the girls Under-12 title, and Stephanie Davis got by Stephanie Tom 6-1,7-5 in the girls Under-14 event.
Nadia Mitchell, marketing officer at title sponsor Globe Insurance Company Limited, said it was easy for Globe to partner with the tournament series as it facilitated the growth of the youth in Jamaica.
“We were treated to an exciting tournament that encompassed fair play and exceptional talent from the juniors,” Mitchell said.
