Whyte wins quarter at Brazil GP
FORMER national champion Rosemarie Whyte set a new meet record 51.47 seconds while winning the Women’s 400-metre event at the Uberlandia Grand Prix in Brazil on Wednesday.
Racing for the first time since placing second to Novlene Williams-Mills at the Jamaica National Jamaica International Invitational the former Holmwood Technical student beat two Americans to erase the previous meet record of 51.95 seconds set by Debbie Dunn of the USA two years ago.
Monica Hargrove was second to Whyte in a season-best 51.76 seconds, while Keshia Baker was third in 52.05 seconds.
Whyte is down to compete in the fourth meet in the series in Brazil, to be held in Sao Paulo on Sunday.
Two-time IAAF World Junior 100m champion Dexter Lee is also down to take part in the men’s 100m, where he will go up against Great Britain’s Dwayne Chambers, who won the 100m in Uberlandia on Wednesday.
Chambers, the IAAF World Indoors 60m champions last year, ran a season-best 10.13 seconds to beat Jamaica’s Kimmari Roach, who ran 10.28 seconds, while two Trinidadians Keston Bledman, 10.31 seconds, and Marc Burns was fourth in 10.54.
Korene Hinds, who was third in the 800m in Belem on Sunday, was third in the 3000m steeplechase in 10 minutes 00.41 seconds, finishing behind Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayanna, 9:49.42 and Kenya’s Puriy Cherotich Kirui, 9.55.17.
After placing second in a season-best 13.33 seconds in Belem on Sunday, Andrea Bliss was third in the 100m hurdles in 13.48 seconds as Colombia’s Brigite Merlano won in 13.13, ahead of Brazil’s Giselle Marculino de Alburquerque, 13.45.
