Manager allays fears Williams-Mills injured
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Jamaica’s quarter-miler Novlene Williams-Mills is healthy and continuing her preparation for the June 23-25 Jamaica Senior National Trials.
There were fears that Williams-Mills had suffered an injury at a meet in Puerto Rico earlier this month, but an email from her manager Chris Layne confirmed she did not suffer any injury and was in fact healthy.
“Novlene felt a cramp during the race and being that it is a World Championship year and coming off a good race in Jamaica, she did not want to take a chance so she stopped. She is training and getting ready for the Jamaican Trials,” the the email response on Sunday.
After running a season-best 50.71 seconds to win at the Jamaica National Jamaica International Invitational on may 7, Williams-Mills had told the media she was having some issues with her thigh.
The next week she failed to finish a race in Ponce, Puerto Rico, giving rise to concerns that she might have suffered an injury.
Layne also said it was not certain whether Williams-Mills would race before the Trials as she was still making up her mind.
The 2007 Osaka World Championships bronze medallist is based in Orlando Florida where she trains with the Brooks Johnson group along with Jamaican hurdlers Deloreen Ennis and Dwight Thomas.
