Romantic top INSPORTS community football league
ROMANTIC United of Kingston became the new champions when they defeated Tenament Youths of St James 4-3 on penalties in the 2010/2011 Claro/INSPORTS All-Island Community League at the National Stadium on Sunday.
The game ended in 1-1 after full and extra time, and penalties were used at the final tie-breaker.
Kern Binns had given Romantic a fifth-minute lead before substitute Nickoy Laird found the equaliser in the 64th minute for Tenament Youths.
Romantic walked away with the winners’ first prize cash award of $500,000, while Tenamnet Youths collected $170,000.
It was a very exciting final from the outset with The Kingston-based Romantic taking control in the early stages with flowing attacks, but the St James-based Tenament Youths soaked up the pressure.
With the game just five minutes old, Christopher Baker was brought down inside the penalty box after eluding his opponent and a penalty was awarded.
Romantics’ Binns made no mistake from the 12-yard spot.
Tenament, too, won a penalty, but the resulting shot by Tennison Jarrett missed the frame.
Another chance came for Tenament when Jarrett gave Romantic’s goalkeeper Jermaine Frazer some work to do with his hard left-footer.
On the resumption, Romantic sought to extend their lead, but Tenament Youths responded in kind until the St James aggregation finally got the equaliser in the 64th minute. From a ball played through the Romantic defence, Laird went in chase and fired a right-footer that deflected off goalkeeper Frazer and into the goal.
In the penalty shoot-out, the scorers for Romantic were Rohan Reid, Gerald Reid, Patrick Jackson and Kern Binns, while Jevenney Henry missed. Scorers for Tenament Youths were Krishna Walcott, Ramond Wilson and Jolian Daley, while Nickoy Laird and Rohan Reid were off target.
Meanwhile, Crook’s Street United of Kingston defeated Ocho Rios Sports Club 5-2 to claim third place and $100,000, with the losers picking up $50,000.
