My Ocho Rios – Dr Osmond Tomlinson
What are your earliest memories of Ocho Rios?
I remember as a small boy going to Walsh’s barber shop on a Saturday with my father and taking in the whole experience — grown men chatting about grown-up things, ska and rocksteady music on the sound system (we’re talking early 1960s here), sitting on a board across the arms of the chair because I was too short, the clacking sound as the barber “flashed” his scissors and feeling a bit scared when he sharpened his razor on the leather strap attached to the chair. I felt like a “big boy” after going to the barber with my dad!!
What do you miss most when you are not in Ocho Rios?
My home. It’s my refuge. I also miss the beach.
What would you do if you were mayor for a day?
First off, I think Ochi needs a mayor or at least a non-political town manager but St Ann’s Bay is the parish capital and so we are governed by the Mayor of St Ann’s Bay. If I were mayor for a day the first thing I would do is remove all the taxis from the vicinity of the clock and make them use the transportation centre. I would then make Main Street, from the Texaco gas station to the Jamaica Grande entrance, a pedestrian-only boardwalk. It would be a fabulous attraction both day and night.
What do you like most about living in Ocho Rios?
It’s home. I was born and grew up here. I love the beach, the attractions and the fact that we are so centrally located — everywhere in Jamaica is not much more than an hour-and-a-half away from Ochi. It’s so convenient.
What’s your middle name?
Ainsley.
Which living person do you most admire, and why?
Usain Bolt because of his commitment to excellence and his competitive spirit. Also, he’s a real role model to all Jamaicans by showing us that talent combined with consistent hard work will result in great achievement.
Share with us the title of the last book you read.
I have to share the last two books I’ve read as they both helped change my life. They are The China Study by Thomas M Campbell and Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Dr Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. These books are the reason why I am now a vegan and living a much healthier lifestyle.
And the last bit of music that stirred your soul?
Nessun Dorma by Luciano Pavarotti always brings me to tears.
What is your most treasured possession?
The watch that my father wore every day for many years.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Lying on a quiet beach with a cool drink and a good book with my wife and kids close by.
Share a little about your new projects.
I’m currently putting in a cutstone walkway at my home and creating a new lawn area. I designed the project and have been closely supervising the work. My wife is worried that it’s taking too long but I’m a stickler for detail.
What upsets you?
It upsets me that Kingston folk have to plan a trip to Ochi weeks ahead of time, as though they were going to another continent. Come on, we’re just down the road. Come visit, we’ll make you feel at home.
Who or what inspires you?
I am inspired by the memory of my father who was someone I always looked up to. He was a real gentleman, a healer and a friend to all, who never had a bad word to say about anyone and loved his family more than anything.
Name the last three places you visited on holidays.
We usually vacation as a family and the last three places that we’ve visited were Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Marbella, Spain and Port Antonio, Portland.
Which cologne are you currently splashing?
I switch between Penhaligon’s LP No: 9 for men and Oud & Bergamot by Jo Malone depending on my mood.
What’s your preferred beverage?
That’s easy — Wray & Nephew white rum and water.
What is the best thing about your job?
It sounds a bit cheesy but I derive tremendous satisfaction from treating really sick people, especially kids, and seeing them get better.
Share your favourite ‘chill’ spots in Ocho Rios.
My favourite chill spot is my own verandah but if I go out there’s nowhere classier than Jamaica Inn, a real power spot.
What’s your advice to a first-time visitor to Ocho Rios?
Make sure to visit MissT’s Kitchen, the best authentic Jamaican restaurant in Ochi, and try the escoveitch veggie burger. It’s amazing. Also, everyone has to go to Dunn’s River Falls at least once in their lifetime. Yes, there are loads of other attractions but Dunn’s River Falls is a must.
Finally, what’s your philosophy?
I believe that a healthy life begins with a healthy lifestyle. Also, I always do and say whatever I want because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.
