Rosemount lift St James Division One crown
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Rosemount FC came from behind three times to beat favourites Norwood Strikers 3-1 on penalties to win the St James Football Association Claro Division One title at Jarrett Park on Sunday.
Rushane Reid scored three times to give Norwood the lead, including once on extra time, but on each occasion Rosemount would claw their way back to end at 3-3 before winning it on penalties.
The teams had played to a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the finals played last week.
Norwood were let down by faulty goalkeeping by Dunstan Nicolas who could be blamed on two of the three goals scored by Joseph Scott, Andre Williams and Calvin Beckford, respectively.
This was the second straight final that Norwood were losing after being beaten in the Division Two finals by Kempshot last season, but will be promoted along with the champions to the Senior League next year.
Norwood were expected to walk away with the title after dominating the regular season, losing just two games and finishing 10 points head of Rosemount.
Reid, who has been a prolific goal scorer over the last two seasons, gave them a dream start, scoring in the third minute, beating defender Gregory Anderson down the right wing, cutting into the box before placing the ball out of reach of goalkeeper Christopher Rickman, beating him to his right.
Rafic Robinson tested Rickman with a long range shot that stayed at chest height but flashed past the right post on its way out in the seventh minute.
Rosemount drew level in the 11th minute when Nicolas waved at a corner kick taken by Scott, but only managed to deflect the ball into his own goal.
The goal gave Rosemount confidence and they eventually took over the game, forcing Norwood back into their own defence but failed to make use of their chances.
Rickman was forced into making a gutsy double save in the 56th minute, blocking two point-blank shots while on the ground as Norwood came forward.
At the other end, Norwood’s top striker Javier Peak, who was close marked for the entire game, managed to shake off two defenders in one of his better moves all evening, took the ball to the touch line and sent a low hard cross into the area but none of his teammates was in place to convert.
After missing a point-blank chance in the 64th minute, Reid restored Norwood’s lead in the 82nd minute as he took on the entire Rosemount defence. He dribbled right through the penalty area before beating Rickman to his left with a well placed shot.
Rosemount came back two minutes later when the burly midfielder Williams scored with an acrobatic overhead kick that gave Nicolas no chance, as the teams played out a second 2-2 regulation time score.
Reid was at it again early in the first period of extra time when he gave them the lead for the third time, but another mistake by Nicolas allowed Beckford the equaliser in the 103rd minute.
The goalkeeper failed to get to a ball that hit off his body, on to the left post and dribbled across the goal line.
In the penalty shoot-out Norwood missed their first two attempts as Okeefe Brown, Peak and Scott all converted, while Robinson was the only scorer for Norwood.
