Village United and Highgate FC clash in inaugural Mayor’s Cup
FLORENCE HALL, Trelawny — PREMIER League team Village United and newly promoted Highgate FC will meet in the second game of a double-header at the Trelawny Multi-purpose stadium this Sunday for the first hold on the Falmouth Mayor’s Cup.
According to a release from the Mayor’s office, “in a move to encourage various sporting events in the parish, the Trelawny Parish Council, in association with Miller Sports and Entertainment consultant firm, will host the (first) Mayor Cup”.
In the first game, a Trelawny Police team will take on a select team, starting at 1:00 pm before the featured game.
A spokesman for Miller’s Sports and Entertainment consultant firm explained to Observer West that the winners of the second game would get the trophy, but they hoped to expand the event next year and possibly bring in international teams.
The Miller’s spokesman said they were hoping the start of the series of games would help to empower the youths of the parish.
Meanwhile, Village United — who qualified for the top six of the Premier League last year — and Highgate, who won the qualifying league to advance to the island’s top league for the first time, will continue their preparations for the Premier League that is expected to kick off at the end of this month.
