‘Dirty meat’ the cause, says FIFA
ZURICH, Switzerland (AFP) — Contaminated meat was the cause of 109 players at the Under-17 World Cup in Mexico this year testing positive for the banned anabolic agent, clenbuterol, FIFA announced yesterday.
“It was a problem of public health, not doping,” world football governing body’s medical officer Jiri Dvorak said.
The Mexican authorities concluded that the outbreak had been triggered by “food contamination” when they decided not to punish five Mexico players who had tested positive for the substance at the competition in June and July.
FIFA and WADA declined to prosecute any cases.
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has advised athletes competing at the ongoing PanAmerican Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, to be especially careful as to what they ate during the event.
