Cochran cards 68 for Open title
ROSE HALL, St James — American Senior pro Russ Cochran shot a 10-under-par 206 to win the 48th staging of the Lime Jamaica Open Golf Tournament that ended at the Half Moon Course yesterday.
Cochran, who shared the lead after Thursday’s first day, shot four-under-par 68 on yesterday’s third and final day of the 54-hole event.
The left-handed Cochran, who had shot four-under-par 68 on the opening day and two-under-par Friday, beat Dave Rummels and Dave Levesque by two shots as they finished on eight-under 208.
Olin Brown, the overnight leader, finished in fourth place on seven-under-par 209 after shooting the round of the tournament with a five-under-par 67 on Friday which gave him a one-shot lead over Jim Thorpe and Levesque coming into yesterday’s final day.
Despite his best day of the weekend, Jamaica’s Johnny Bloomfield suffered his lowest finish in four years after he was fifth place on six-under-par 210.
Yesterday, Bloomfield shot four-under-par 68.
Jamaica’s Wesley Brown shot a two-over-par 218 (72, 75,71) to win the amateur section, having led from the first day.
Meanwhile on Friday, American Olin Browne shot a brilliant five-under-par 67 in the second round to take a one-shot lead entering the final day.
Browne, the US Senior Open champion had shot a two-under-par 70 on Thursday’s rain affected day and moved past seven players to be the sole leader on seven-under 137, one shot ahead of fellow senior pro Jim Thorpe who shot four-under 68 Friday, and Dave Levesque, who also carded a 68.
After Thursday’s rain-affected day, conditions were much better on the final two days as the sun came out and the wind stayed down, much to the delight of the players.
Friday’s play extended well after the scheduled cut-off time as the last three groups finished in near darkness due to slow play by some of the early groups early in the day.
The slow play resulted in two groups meeting on several tees, waiting for the group ahead of them to finish.
Also on Friday, Browne carded five birdies, two on the first three holes and two on the final three, but said he still had a lot of work to do on the final day.
“We will see what happens tomorrow,” he told the Sunday Observer back then.
“There is still a lot of golf to be played and I will just try to get off to a good start and see what happens.”
Having played the course three days in a row, he said, he was getting “more familiar” with it and was hitting the ball a lot better.
The gregarious Thorpe who is a fan favourite here had three straight birdies to take the early lead with sub-par scores on holes two three and four; had bogies on seven and 11, but got back a shot by birdying the 17th as he carded a four-under-par 68 Friday.
Levesque, who played in the same pairing as Thorpe, also had a good day as he matched the senior.
Cochran, who led after Thursday’s first round with a four-under 68, shot a two-under par 70 Friday for a two-day score of six-under 138, one more than Dick Mast, his co-leader after the first round.
Three time winner Bloomfield was in joint 10th place on two-under 142 after shooting an even par 72 Friday, along with another Jamaican, Peter Horrobin, who also had scores of two-under 70 and even-par 72.
