St Catherine rule!
DISCOVERY BAY, St Ann — National leg-spinner Odean Brown took four wickets, including a hat-trick to inspire St Catherine CC to a 12-run win over St Elizabeth CA in yesterday’s final of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) JAM Twenty20 (T20) competition at the scenic Ultimate Cricket Ground.
Scores: St Catherine 118 all out (19.3 overs); St Elizabeth 106-9 (overs).
Brown dismissed Davion Davidson, Krishna Graham and Howard Powell in consecutive balls in his first over, before also accounting for all-rounder Shawn Findlay to peg back St Elizabeth at 39-5 in their chase of 119.
Brown finished with stupendous figures of 4-6 off three overs.
Captain Tamar Lambert lauded the sidelined West Indies ‘A’ spinner for bowling an outstanding over to help set up the victory and credited his team for playing well throughout the competition.
“Odean Brown bowled an excellent over, taking three wickets to put us in a good position.
“The important thing is that the players believed they could win and we bowled and fielded well in the match. We worked hard for this, we didn’t lose a match and I think we played the best cricket to win the T20 tournament,” Lambert said.
St Catherine won the previous staging of a JCA T20 competition, beating Manchester CA in the 2009 final.
Yesterday, St Catherine won the toss and opted to bat and struggled to get going on a pitch that appeared inconsistent in pace, if not bounce.
West Indies limited overs batsman Danza Hyatt top scored with 25 off 31 balls, while all-rounder Andre Russell hit 17. The in-form Lambert made only one.
Wrist-spinner Alton Beckford took 3-17 off four overs, while part-timer Brenton Parchment chipped in with 2-17. Former West Indies fast-bowler Daren Powell also grabbed two wickets.
In reply, St Elizabeth sped off to 37-1 as out-of-favour national opener Brenton Parchment methodically attacked Russell and company.
This led Lambert to throw Brown into the attack and employ the use of a short leg fielder. The tactic seemed to agitate the powerfully built Davidson, who tried to heave Brown out of the park, but instead found his bails dislodged.
The St Catherine team started to celebrate, certain the batsman had been clean bowled, but Davidson stood his ground as the standing umpire Desmond Edwards and square leg official Norman Malcolm controversially ruled that he was not out.
After a brief protest, the game restarted and the wily Brown had Davidson (one) caught at short leg off the very next delivery.
The irrepressible leggie then trapped Krishna Graham (0) lbw and followed up with a loopy delivery that Howard Powell (0) drove straight to Russell at mid-on to complete the rare feat.
Brown continued to pour misery on the St Elizabeth batsmen when he clean bowled Shawn Findlay in his next over.
The crucial loss of Parchment (37), who shared in a sixth wicket stand of 30 with an assured Cassius Burton (39), made a St Elizabeth win highly improbable.
Lambert supported Brown with 2-17, including the wicket of Parchment, who went to the lbw route.
Left-arm spinner Stephan Casey, medium pacer David Morgan and Russell took one wicket a-piece.
Captain Daren Powell said poor decisions and lack of confidence contributed to the defeat.
“We made wrong choices at important stages of the match. I think Parchment made a rash decision with the shot he attempted off Lambert. Aside from that, we have a confidence issue and I think we just got nervous,” he said.
In the opening third-place play-off match, Melbourne CC beat 2009 finalist Manchester CA by seven runs, thanks to aggressive half centuries from Damion Jacobs and Andre McCarthy.
Scores: Melbourne 151-8 (20 overs); Manchester 144-8 (20 overs).
Jacobs cracked 68 off 50 deliveries, while McCarthy belted a 35-ball 55 to help their team to a challenging total.
Neive McNally and Jamie Merchant took three wickets each, while Donovan Sinclair ended with two.
In reply, Manchester were pegged back by the spin barrage of Melbourne before Sinclair hit a whirlwind unbeaten 44 off 22 balls to narrow the margin of defeat.
McCarthy, bowling the last over of the innings, was carted for four sixes.
Damion Bryce blasted 41 off 33 balls earlier in the innings.
Left-arm slow bowler Nikita Miller grabbed 3-18; leg-spinner Damion Jacobs 2-12 and off-spinner Yannick Elliott with 2-27 were the chief destroyers. Left-arm spinner Christopher Lamont took one wicket.
