W’Knibb seek final basketball semis berth
MARTHA BRAE, Trelawny — William Knibb High could secure the fourth and final place in the semi-finals of the ISSA/KFC Western
Conference Under-19 basketball competition when they take on qualifiers Holland High at home this afternoon.
William Knibb, who are returning to the competition this season after a year away, are on eight points but have a game in hand against Rhodes Hall on Friday to close out the first round.
A win would see William Knibb joining leaders and defending champions Cornwall College, on 14 points; Spot Valley, 12, and Holland, 11, in the semis set for next week.
Also today, unbeaten teams Muschett High and Herbert Morrison Technical meet at Wakefield, Trelawny, in a game that could decide the top seed in the Under-16 section.
Muschett lead with 14 points from seven straight wins, two more than Herbert Morrison, who have won all six games played so far.
Both teams are coming off wins over Cornwall College, who completed their schedule on Monday with a low-scoring win over Holland High. Today’s game at Wakefield should be competitive between two good teams, but visitors Herbert Morrison could have the edge with a better all-round team.
Meanwhile, on Monday, Cornwall College’s Under-19 team completed their first-round schedule by beating Holland, 57-45, for a perfect 7-0 record and securing the top seed going into the play-offs.
Christopher Ray Smith led Cornwall with 31 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocked shots, while Tevin Brown had a season-high 18 points, 10 assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Cornell Draggon scored 18 points for Holland, who were losing for the first time this season, while Kenric Lindo scored 12 points and five rebounds.
Cornwall also won the Under-16 game, 28-10, with Kyle Schloss scoring 12 points and Rashid Davis 10, while Hugh Smith scored eight points to lead Holland.
