Let Walker be spokesperson for national security
Opposition leader, Andrew Holness has named a 16-member Shadow Cabinet and Delroy Chuck has been named spokesperson on justice, national security, electoral matters and leader of Opposition business in the House.
The PNP government of the 70s appointed a minister with both portfolios and it proved disastrous and a conflict of interest. The minister was responsible for law eenforcement and court-related matters. He was wearing two hats all at once, and as a result the ministries were not properly managed.
The minister of national security has responsibility for:
(1) The JCF/ISCF
(2) The JDF
(3) The Correctional Services
(4) Places of Safety and approved schools
(5) Passport Immigration and Citizenship Agency
(6) Caribbean Search Centre
(7) Port Security Corps ( Regulatory Authority)
(8) Firearm Licensing Authority
(9) Forensic Lab and Morgue
(10) Police Academy
(11) Caribbean Regional Drug Law Enforcement Training Centre.
To add the responsibility of justice would make it very difficult for Mr Chuck to handle.
I would suggest that Mr Danville Walker be appointed spokesperson for national security, based on his military experience.
