Sly & Robbie for NZ show
DRUM and bass duo of Sly & Robbie are the only Jamaican-based act on this year’s staging of the New Zealand’s biggest reggae event, Raggamuffin.
The festival, now in its fifth year, is scheduled for the Rotorua International Stadium on Friday, January 27 to Saturday, January 28.
The other acts include US-based former Wailers instrumentalist Junior Marvin and British-born Marvin Priest, the son of Maxi Priest.
The organisers said the show will feature a mix of local Kiwi and international acts.
Ali Campbell’ UB40 is headlining the event. Other acts include Hawaiian reggae group J Boog, hip-hop ensemble Arrested Development, R&B singer Billy Ocean, American reggae band Big Mountain, as well as South African Nkulee Dube — Lucky Dube’s daughter. Spawnbreezie, Kora, Katchafire, House of Shem, 1814, Cornerstone Roots, Three Houses Down, NRG Rising, Tomorrow People, Soljah, Foundation, Chad Chambers, DJ Sir-Vere and DJ Poroufessor are also schedule to perform.
Just before the last year’s staging, Sean Paul was forced to withdraw due to “unforeseen commitments”. However, Jamaican reggae was well-represented by the original Wailers, Jimmy Cliff, Maxi Priest and Ky-Mani Marley.
