SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Penn Relay championships 4x400m relay winners Munro College and Vere Technical have sent warnings they will be hard to beat this season after easy wins on Saturday at the 29th staging of the Grace Kennedy STETHS Invitational held at the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex.

Despite an interruption by rain in the afternoon that forced the meet to end under temporary floodlights, a number of top high schools athletes excited the large crowd. An interruption in public electricity supply lasting several hours also affected the smooth running of the meet.

IAAF World Youth Championships double medallist, Green Islands’ Odail Todd, made his season debut in the Boys’ Class One 400m, easily winning his heat in a personal best 50.20 seconds, but was second overall to STETHS’ Quishain Parchment who ran 49.60 seconds to win his heat with Vere Technical’s Shawn Rowe third in 50.40 seconds.

The Boys’ Mile Relay was expected to be a clash between Munro College and Wolmer’s Boys, but the Penn Relays champions team of Ifeanyi Otounye, Rolando Reid, Kanneil Harrison and Delano Williams raced to a 3:18.90 minutes clocking to beat Manchester High (3:23.23) with St Elizabeth Technical (3.23.95) and Wolmer’s following behind.

The Vere girls were easy winners as Andrenette Knight, Olivia James, Shericka Jackson and Yanique McNeil ran 3:44.83 minutes to beat Holmwood by over 20 metres with Edwin Allen third and Clarendon College fourth.

Holmwood Technical and Edwin Allen girls, meantime, won their respective 4×800-m races.

Holmwood won the Boys section in 7:59.90 minutes after battling Bellefield High who ran 8:10.40 with Clarendon College third.

Edwin Allen took the Girls’ section with 9:06.13 ahead of Holmwood Technical and Spaulding High.

Jackson, a medallist in the IAAF World Youth 200m last year, earlier won the Class One Girls’ 100m with 11.80 seconds, followed by Herbert Morrison’s Kenesha Stephens (12.00) and Shawnette Lewin of Edwin Allen third in 12.10 seconds.

Shanice Bonner, who transferred to Holmwood after competing for Queen’s last season and William Knibb Memorial’s Channiel Johnson were both credited with 12.00 seconds clocking in the Class Two 100m, while competing in separate heats while the Hydel High pair of Isheena Belnavis and Ayeshia Morgan were both timed in 12.30 seconds in Class Three.

Herbert Morrison’s Michael Campbell won the Boys’ Class One 100m in 10.80 seconds ahead of his teammate Clayton Coates- (10.85) with Tafari Green of STETHS in third place, posting 10.89.

Kayel Bennett of Wolmer’s Boys won Class Two with 10.94 seconds ahead of May Day High School’s Michael Campbell (11.03) and Green Island’s Oshayne Hylton (11.10).

Munro College’s Rushane Edwards won Class Three in 11.28 seconds, beating Manchester High’s Nicholas Alexander (11.30) and Camperdown’s Brandon Robinson (11.51) third.

Renae Ambersley, who transferred to Herbert Morrison from Irwin High, won the Class One Girls’ 400m in 55.98 seconds ahead of Holmwood Technical’s Chatalia Watson (57.79) and schoolmate Tovia Jenkins (58.08 seconds).

Holmwood’s Shadae Hylton won Class Two in 58.57 seconds, ahead of Hydel’s Britaney Duncan (58.63) and Youth Olympics representative Asaine Hall of Petersfield (58.92).

CARIFTA Games medallist Simoya Campbell won the girls Class One 1,500m in a smart 4:47.28 minutes, while STETHS’ Alethia McLaughlin, who also represented the island at the CARIFTA Games, won Class Two in 4:53.28, while the Class Three title went to Vere Technical’s Sasha Gay Whyte in 5:01.89.

Munro College’s Emmunuel Onyia won the boys’ Class One discus and shot put double with throws of 48.30m and 17.08m, respectively.

Daniel Thomas of Edwin Allen, who represented the island at the Junior Pan-Am Championships in Florida last year, won the Girls’ Class One discus with 48.06m, beating teammate Tara-Sue Barnett (44.19m) and Vere Technical’s Debisha Scarlett (40.32m).

Thomas also won the shot put Open with 13.12m, ahead of Holmwood’s Alisan Robinson (12.44m) and Scarlett (12.04m.

STETHS’s CARIFTA Games champion Peta Gay Reid won the Class One high jump with 1.75m, while Immaculate Conception’s Safia Morgan took Class Two with 1.69m ahead of Vere Technical’s Jehvania Whyte’s 1.66m.
