Two records fall at Intercol meet
At press time yesterday, two records were shattered at the 51st staging at the Intercol VMBS Track and Field Meet at the UWI/Usain Bolt track.
Mico University College’s Rushell Clayton erased Rosemarie White 59.38 seconds to set the new mark of 58.55 seconds in the 400 metres hurdle, while GC Foster College’s Kimberly Stevens’ 6.36 metres leap erased Peta-Gay Beckford’s 6.21 metres long jump record.
Defending champions GC Foster at press time led the women’s category with 85 points ahead of UTech on 51, Mico 31 and UWI, 27.
UWI, meantime, were out front in men’s action with 84 points, followed by defending champion UTech (82 points) and GC Foster College (67).
World University Games champion Carrie Russell (UTech) captured the 100 metres in 11.35 seconds, while World University silver medallist Jason Young ran 10.29 to win the men’s equivalent.
In the men’s 800 metres, UWI Jowayne Hibbert clocked 1:50.89 to win ahead of the UTech duo of Ricardo Cunningham and Antoniel Prince, while in the women’ s event UTech Arusha McKenzie won in 2:10.13.
In other results, Marlon Dixon won the 400 metres hurdles in 53.46 seconds; Juliani Bogle of UWI leapt 2.00 metres to win the men’s high jump; Jeffery King of GC Foster threw 57.12 metres for the Javelin title; Odayne Richards retained the men’s discus title throwing 57.50 metres; UTech’s Shauna Kay Woolery’s 13.98 metres effort gave her the shot put victory; Roxcine Salmon (GC Foster) 10:48.06 seconds won the 3,000 metres for women.
The meet resumes today at 12:30 pm with 21 finals, including the 200 metres. The men’s sprint relay will be without defending champions UWI as one of their athletes had a cramp on the second leg and the team failed to finish.
