J’can Morrissey hits hat-trick in Finland
STEVEN Morrissey scored a hat-trick in Finland and his countryman Darren Mattocks was on target for the first time in the US Major League Soccer as Jamaicans continued to excel in overseas domestic football competitions.
Twenty-five-year-old Morrissey netted in the 11th, 60th and 90th minutes for VPS to blank KuPS 3-0 in the 2012 Veikkausliiga, Finland’s Premier League, on Saturday night.
Morrissey, who played for Portmore United, has moved his tally to six goals, the third best in the league after 10 games.
JJK’s midfielder Tamás Gruborovics leads the league with seven goals, three of them penalties, ahead of Petteri Forsell of Mariehamn with six goals, which include two penalties.
While striker Morrissey also has six goals, Forsell has provided five assists and Gruborovics two assists.
Starting in all nine of 10 matches so far this season, Morrissey, who hit home four goals for VPS last season, is averaging a goal every 136 minutes.
Meanwhile, at the Jeld-Wen field in Portland, Oregon, 21-year-old Mattocks scored in the 84th minute for his first US Major League goal and second of the season for the Vancouver Whitecaps who held home team Portland Timbers 1-1.
Kris Boyd sent Portland ahead in the 67th minute before Mattocks drew the Whitecaps level 15 minutes later to put Vancouver in fifth place in the Western Conference with 19 points from 12 games. Portland are seventh place with 13 points, also after 12 games.
