Riley cops award after superb year
UNIVERSITY of Illinois senior Andrew Riley, the first in NCAA Division One history to win the 100 metres and 110m hurdles at the same outdoor championship, was on Wednesday named National Men’s Track Athlete of the Year by United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The 23-year-old Jamaican entered the NCAA Championships in the 100m as the 31st seed overall out of 96 contestants. He lowered his personal best from 10.52 seconds on April 21 to 10.02 on June 6.
He became the first Jamaican man since Michael Green in 1993 to have won the NCAA Division One 100m title.
Despite being the 14th fastest man in the world this year, Riley told USA Today Sports he had run his last 100m and would not be competing in the event at the Jamaican Championships.
“There is no hope for me. Eight guys (Jamaicans) are running 9.9.”
In the 110m hurdles, Riley lived up to his top-seed billing and won all four rounds. The finance major clocked 13.53 seconds in the final, in face of a 3.5m/s headwind.
One of the year’s top 15 sprint hurdlers, Riley is hoping to defend his national title at the end of the month. The Calabar past student will get tough challenges Dwight Thomas and Hansle Parchment.
Riley also led his college team in the 4×100 relay to the league crown, which clinched his award. He also clinched the Eddleman male athlete of the year at the University of Illinois.
Riley won four NCAA titles in his Illinois career, which ties for the most in the history of the programme. He is also an 11-time first-team All-American and 11-time Big Ten champion.
Jamaica’s fourth-fastest sprint hurdler of all time, Riley holds five Illini school records, one Big Ten record and two Big Ten meet records.
