Saint Cecelia obliges in Cliggott Mem Trophy
RECENT Jamaica winning combination, trainer Spencer Chung and jockey Shane Ellis, continued their mercurial run with a fine double, including posting 1-9 favourite Saint Cecelia to victory in the $1,180,000 Eileen Cliggott Memorial Trophy (Gr.I) feature to highlight the 11-race card at Caymanas Park yesterday.
A pumped-up Ellis, who went on to ride a four-timer, crowned his afternoon’s work with a sensible ride aboard Saint Cecelia to get the reigning Horse-of-the-Year and champion sprinter to run 1300m in 1:19.4 for a well-earned two-length victory after recovering from being hindered at the 800m point.
Blast Them Away, an American import ridden by leading jockey Dane Nelson who was suffering his second defeat by Saint Cecelia, was second.
The fast American-bred three-year-old filly, Noon It Is, who led until being overhauled after turning for home, held her gallop to finish third another 4 1/2 lengths back, with Raise A Ruckus, ridden by four-time champion jockey Omar Walker, completing the frame in the field of five.
Saint Cecelia, owned by WP Valentine Chung & Robert F Chung (Executor of the estate of Stephen Chung), was winning her eighth straight win since losing over the distance in June of last year.
Chung said he could not ask for more from the filly: “She showed that she is really a horse of class. This was shown after she managed to overcome a few obstacles in the race, but I thought even at that point she should have won, and she did.”
A six-year-old bay mare by Burning Marque out of She’s On Wheels (Bates Motel), Saint Cecelia was winning her 16th race from 27 career starts and earned $648,650 for a lifetime bankroll of $14,714,850.
Ellis’ other rides on the card were Burning Cielo in the first race for trainer Victor Williams; Mentalist in the fifth for trainer Anthony Nunes, and Go Go Yvonne in the eighth to open the double for Chung.
