Olympic ‘Diamond’ Grace Jackson
Renowned Jamaica athlete Grace Jackson (left) receives her ‘Diamond in Jamaica Gold’ Jamaica 50 Award from Professor Sir Kenneth Hall, Honorary Director of CCRP (Caribbean Community of Retired Persons) after being pinned by CCRP Chair Professor Denise Eldemire Shearer. Occasion was a CCRP Second Anniversary event held at the Pegasus Hotel on Saturday at which five veteran Olympians were honoured. The citation noted that Ms Jackson competed in three Olympic Games — 1984, 1988 and 1992. In 1984 she made the finals in four events (100, 200, 4×100 and 4×400) — the first woman from the English- speaking Caribbean to do so. In 1988 she captured the silver medal in the 200m and finished fourth in 100m. Her times in 100-200-400 are still in world’s top five of women sprinters. Miss Jackson also won medals in the Commonwealth Games and in the CAC Championships. She retired from athletics after her 1992 Olympic effort. Other Olympians honoured were Dr Cynthia Thompson, Vilma Charlton, Don Quarrie (who was unable to be present) and Bertland Cameron.
