JAAA announces scaled down team for CAC Champs
THE Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) on Saturday night released a scaled down team of 58 athletes to represent Jamaica at the 19th Central American and Caribbean Junior Track and Field Championships to be held at the Estadio Nacional Flor Blanca ‘Mágico González’ in San Salvador, El Salvador this weekend.
The team, which was selected on Tuesday but was not released until Saturday, is scheduled to leave the island on Wednesday, the Jamaica Observer learned for the event set for June 29-July 1.
The team is 25 less than the powerful 84-member contingent that topped the last staging held in the Dominican Republic two years ago with 63 medals, 25 gold, 19 silver and 19 bronze — more than the 59 medals they won in 2006 in Trinidad.
Edwin Allen’s Michael Dyke has been named head coach, his first of back-to-back duties as he has also been named to lead the team that will participate at the 14th IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain just over a week later.
The team will see 17 members of the 2010 team that competed in the CAC Juniors in the Dominican Republic and 33 of the 39 athletes who were named to participate in the World Juniors.
Saqukine Cameron of Edwin Allen will be the only Jamaican athlete who will get the chance to defend a title when she lines up in the Under-18 girls 100m, while Odean Skeen, who won the boys Under-17 sprint double two years ago, hurdler Omar McLeod and Shericka Jackson will all be seeking to win individual gold medals in back-to-back championships.
Jamaica had also won all four 100m titles, all four 4x100m relays two years ago, and two of the four 4x400m relays in the Dominican Republic.
