J’can Miller clinches shot put A title

Jamaican Ashinia Miller threw 19.70 metres to take the shot put (6K) Boys A final yesterday at the XIX Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior A & B Championships in San Salvador, El Salvador.

Keith Romeo of Trinidad & Tobago placed second with a mark of 18.59 metres, while Barbadian Tristan Whitehall finished third in 16.87 metres. Emmanuel Oniya was fourth also with a mark of 16.87 metres.

Another Jamaican Demar Gayle tossed 17.64 metres for second in the boys shot put B final. He was beaten by Mexican Mario Alberto Lozano Flores, who won in 18.92 metres. Trinidadian Worrell Shervone was third in 17.04 metres.

Claudette Allen leapt 5.87 metres for third in the girls long jump B final, won by Akela Jones of Barbados in a mark of 6.36 metres, ahead of Cuban Paula Ross Beatriz Alvarez, 6.17 metres. Tamara Moncrieffe was fourth with 5.70 metres.

Jevaughn Minzie, meanwhile, won heat one of the 100m boys B semi-final clocking 10.42 seconds, as Barbadian Mario Burke took second in 10.65 seconds. Stanley Cruz Del Carmen of the Dominican Republic was third timing 10.83 seconds.

Minzie’s countryman Gawaine Williams took heat three clocking 10.62 seconds. Bahamian Cliff Resias was second with 10.86 seconds and Haitian Fabien Charles third in 11.11 seconds.

In the girls B 100m semi-final, Natalliah Whyte ran 12.14 seconds for second in heat one. Bahamian Carmiesha Cox won in 11.93 seconds, while Taahirah Butterfield of Bermuda was third in 12.28 seconds.

Saqukine Cameron, meanwhile, won heat two clocking 11.77 seconds, beating British Virgin Islands Nelda Huggins, 11.91 seconds, and Bahamian Ashtyn Devynee Charlton, 11.95 seconds.

In the 100m boys A semi-final, Tyquendo Tracey ran 10.63 seconds for third in heat one. Antiguan Dario Jarvis won clocking 10.59 seconds, while Bahamian Blake Bartlett placed second running 10.60 seconds.

Jay Givans took runner-up spot in heat two clocking 10.56 seconds, just trailing Teray Smith of Bahamas who won in 10.54 seconds. Jelani Walsh of Antigua was third in a time of 10.57 seconds.

In the boys B 400m hurdles semi-final, Okeen Williams won heat one clocking 55.10 seconds. Xavier Coakley of Bahamas and Oniel Thomas of St Kitts & Nevis placed second and third timing 55.44 seconds and 56.62 seconds respectively.

Marvin Williams ran 53.82 for third in heat two, after Trinidadian Reubin Walters, 53.29 seconds, and Bahamian D’Mitry Charlton, 53.73 seconds.

In the A semi-final of the boys 400m hurdles, Shavon Barnes clocked 52.67 seconds for second in heat one. Ramfis Rodriguez Vega of Puerto Rico won in 52.45 seconds while Trinidadian Brandon Benjamin placed third in 52.91 seconds.

Heat two went to Kenardo Gallimore, the Jamaican winning in 52.43 seconds. Mexican Jose Fernando Martinez Hernandez ran 52.96 seconds for second while Barbadian Defreitas Kion Joseph finished third in 53.27 seconds.
