Smikle wins discus at NACAC U-23 Champs
TRAVES Smikle tossed 62.11 metres to win the men’s discus at the NACAC Under-23 Championships in Iraputo, Guanajuato in Mexico on Friday.
Smikle, 20, bested American Mason Finley, 59.0m and Trinidad & Tobago’s Quincy Wilson, 57.98. Chad Wright was fourth with 56.9m.
In the women’s 400m, Jody-Ann Muir won heat two in 53.21 seconds to advance with the fastest preliminary time. American Rebecca Alexander won heat one in 53.43. Yanique Haye came up short timing 55.70.
In the men’s equivalent, Akheem Gauntlett ran 47.23 to just advance from heat two. American Brady Gehret, 46.25, and Bahamian Jeffrey Gibson, 46.37, were the two fastest in this one-lap event.
In the men’s 10m, Ramone McKenzie failed to make the cut after clocking 10.46 in heat one.
American Charles Simon and Trinidad & Tobago’s Jamol James were the most impressive in the short dash with 10.19 and 10.20, respectively, from the three heats.
Saniel Atkinson-Grier hit all attempts in the women’s high jump final and did not register any mark as American Tynita Butts won with 1.82 metres, beating Canadian Michelle Theophille, also 1.82 metres and American Allison Barwise, 1.74m.
In the men’s 10,000m, Leighton Spencer did not finish as the United States were one-two with Gabe Proctor and Elliott Krause, who ran 30.46.85 and 30.57.88. Mexican Alejandro Arroyo was third in 31.39.99.
