‘This is it!’ – Multi-talented Russell settles on 400m hurdles
BARCELONA, Spain —
After experimenting with almost every event on the schedule, Holmwood Technical’s talented athlete Janieve Russell says she has found her event, the 400m hurdles.
Russell, who came into the 14th World Junior Championships in Barcelona with the World Junior leading time of 57.04 seconds done at the JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Senior Championships last weekend, is a serious medal prospects here after leading from both rounds, including a 57.23 seconds in the semi-finals yesterday.
The women’s team captain here has competed and won medals in six events —
in the 400m where she has a personal best 53.55 seconds, 100m hurdles (13.72 seconds), high jump (1.80m), long jump (6.20m) and won the silver medal in the heptathlon at the Pan-American Juniors in Miramar, Florida last year.
Russell, who has dyed her close cropped hair a copper blonde which she says was inspired by Olympic champion Melaine Walker’s hairdo, says she was “surprised” by her run yesterday. “I did not know I was running that fast as I am still shuffling between hurdles,” she said.
When asked if she had decided which event she wanted to concentrate on, she lit up with a broad smile and said quickly: “This is it, I
want to do the 400m hurdles, it is my favourite event now.”
She explained that she felt she was good at the intermediate hurdle and with some more experience could do well in it at the next level.
