…Hyde banks on new pair to fire up team
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Coach Lenworth Hyde Snr is expecting new signings Shauntel Mundle and Richard Reid to add extra firepower to Humble Lion’s Premier League title chase.
Humble Lion were uncharacteristically quiet in the transfer market, with only three players, including goalkeeper Joel Messam, joining the Clarendon side ahead of the new Red Stripe Premier League season.
Hyde is, nonetheless, upbeat about the quality of his closed season acquisitions, especially Mundle and Reid.
“These players will bring something to the team,” Hyde told the Jamaica Observer recently. “I saw them in pre-season and they were looking good.”
Mundle, who joined from Portmore United, is essentially a holding/central midfielder, but can also play in defence.
He was highly thought of at Portmore in the early stages of his career, but has found first-team opportunities hard to come by in recent years.
However, Hyde is expecting the schoolboy football Triple Crown winner (with Glenmuir High) to add depth and professionalism to his squad.
“Mundle is a professional from Portmore, so he knows what this thing is all about. (His addition) is a plus for us because he can now share the work with (Ricardo Campbell) in midfield,” Hyde said.
Reid is a former daCosta Cup star at Clarendon College but is yet to make a break in top-flight football despite numerous spells at Sporting Central Academy, Portmore United and Harbour View.
Hyde, who worked with the diminutive wide-player at Harbour View, said he is relishing the opportunity to re-unite with the diminutive wide-player.
“I know (him) from Harbour View, so I know exactly what he can offer. It’s just for him to stay focused and disciplined,” Hyde said.
“We are not going to ease up on him,” the coach added. “He’s a talented player but you know sometimes the talented players give a lot of trouble. However, I am glad he’s here with us because he can contribute a lot.”
