It’s been more than 15 years since Leonardo DiCaprio was first thrust into the spotlight in a major way with Baz Luhrmann’s movie Romeo and Juliet. But the fervour of the A-list heartthrob’s fans seems to grow only more intense as the years pass. The Aviator actor, who turns 38 this November, was mobbed by fans last Thursday in Manhattan as filming wrapped for the day on The Wolf of Wall Street. DiCaprio wore light blue cotton trousers and a blue-and-grey striped polo shirt, holding his head down under a blue baseball cap. The actor looked a little overwhelmed as he made his way through the swarm of eager fans, who rather aggressively thrust pieces of paper at him for autographs and pushed camera phones in front of him to take pictures. Not even his bodyguard seemed able to keep the eager young people at bay, at least some of whom appeared to be students. DiCaprio has just finished filming the new Martin Scorsese movie, in which he plays real-life stockbroker-turned-convict Jordan Belfort, who founded Stratton Oakmont aka The Boiler Room, a pump-and-dump scheme, in 1987. Slated for release next year, the crime drama is based on Belfort’s autobiography, and follows the bad boy of finance who eventually spent 22 months in prison, attended rehab, and is paying back over $100 million to duped investors. Both DiCaprio and his co-star Jonah Hill were said to have met with investment bankers at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch offices to help prepare for their roles.

Zoe Saldana stars in Harper’s Bazaar Arabia

She has credited her grandmother with sparking her influence in high fashion. And Zoe Saldana has now put her eclectic since of style on display, as the stunning cover model of Harper’s Bazaar Arabia. The 34-year-old Latina beauty is an ethereal vision in gold and lace as she models Dolce & Gabbana for the luxury fashion magazine’s September issue. The former dancer, who formed her love of the art growing up in the Dominican Republic, gives a nod to her days of studying ballet in an embellished lace leotard adorned with gold brocade. Posing in front of a broken-down home conjuring images of a 19th century plantation, her glamorous look stands in stark contrast to the tall, thirsty grass, dirt and worn columns towering behind her. Saldana’s head is adorned with a golden wreath, a colour theme continued in a plunging V-neck gown with a thigh-high slit draped over her slender frame. Following the Avatar actress around the property, in front of boarded windows and decrepit staircases, the camera captures her beauty in other looks including a lace and organza ballgown and an embellished, floor-sweeping frock. Saldana, in a recent interview with Gotham magazine spoke of her style influences. Her grandmother, she said, kept books on Coco Chanel, leading to her interest in high fashion. Today, she counts modern fashion mavens – ‘effortless beauties’ she calls them – like Sienna Miller, Julianne Moore and Diane Kruger, as her style icons. Saldana explains: “I just love looking at their styles and feeling inspired by their choices.”

Mel Gibson’s new leading lady

Over the last few weeks they have been spotted on a string of dates, and as they stepped out for yet another one last Wednesday, it was clear what Mel Gibson sees in his new leading lady. The musician, whose name is Nadia Lanfranconi, showed off her perfect pins in a piar of tiny denim shorts as she and the Mad Max star made their way to a Beverly Hills eatery. Mel was wearing a yellow shirt and jeans while his much younger love interest teamed her hotpants with a grey vest. They were spotted side by side as they made their way to Terroni restaurant. Nadia’s identity was revealed after the pair stepped out together two weeks ago. And the old smoothie was even bold enough to give his squeeze a neck massage in front of stunned diners yesterday at Morels restaurant in Hollywood’s busy Grove shopping centre. And Mel, 56, certainly still seems to have the magic touch, after landing yet another much younger girlfriend. The wannabe, who has clearly not been put off by the Braveheart actor’s infamous temper, was born and raised in Lake Como, Italy, before moving to Los Angeles at the beginning of 2007.
