My Kingston – Dexter Huxtable
What four words best sum up your sense of style?
Edgy, sophisticated, couture and expressive.
What do you think of the average Jamaican male’s fashion sense?
A majority of us have a great sense of style, but sometimes it’s just not executed in the right way at the right time.
Who is your fashion idol?
I would have to pick two guys from two different eras: Sammy Davis, Jr as he was the first black man to make the cover of GQ, and Kanye West because he can wear anything with style and confidence.
When and why did you decide to become a fashion designer?
I think my fashion sense started maturing at 16 and it was only natural for me, being the son of a master tailor and a seamstress mum.
What are the essentials that every man must have in his wardrobe?
A black suit, white or light blue shirt, a neutral colour tie and a pair of black dress shoes.
Share with is the title of the last book that you read.
Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman.
What is your beverage of choice?
Johnny Walker Blue.
What cologne are you splashing?
Black Code by Giorgio Armani.
Where and when last were you impressed by something fashionable?
About six years ago by a renaissance plaid suit in the Giorgio Armani fall collection.
What music are you listening to in your workshop?
Dennis Brown. I grew up listening to him and he’s one of my favourite reggae icons.
Share some fashionable places in your black book.
I’m really amused by the Japanese and their individual styling in the Shibuya district. I love the menswear details found in Savile Row, London… I admire the traditional look of the handmade buttonholes for jackets and I’m impressed by the handstitched lapels. I also love the tailored cuts of the clothes in Milan, Italy.
Who are your favourite designers?
Locally, I like Carlton Brown and Rick B’s for their tailored approach to menswear fashion; and internationally, I’m a fan of Giorgio Armani’s couture look.
Which fashion trend would you like to see permanently erased?
Definitely square jackets and pleated pants!
Share your favourite chill spots on the island.
I like relaxing at Frenchman’s Cove with my family in Portland.
Who’d be on the phone to you at 3:00 am?
I have a few clients who’d get inspired about a suit and would dial me, but I’m not calling names.
What is your fashion craving when the Jamaica Observer Celebrates Fashion’s Night Out this Thursday, September 6?
A fresh pair of black on black Converse.
What is your philosophy?
Love life and live life.
